My husband, Michael, spent some years just before Thanksgiving “dressing” turkeys at Diemand Farm. We always laughed, imagining the turkeys in little ruffled dresses! Of course, he was really helping out wherever he was needed in the line of folks cleaning, prepping those plump, tender and delicious turkeys for our family and friends’ celebrations, as well as for other grateful celebrants from far and wide. Michael delighted in the company of cooperative people working together to put good food on the table. That’s what Diemand Farm does.

I spent many days hanging out on the farm with Tessa in the 90s. We collected tadpoles, made bouquets of bluets, hid among the itchy hay in the barn, and suffered the consequences of stinging nettle. We used the farm’s landscape as a backdrop for photo shoots with our American Girl dolls while Tessa’s mom and her siblings did the daily farm work around us. When it was time to go inside, we played “office” in Elsie’s office space, organizing folders and clacking away at the typewriter.
Elsie was right behind us in the kitchen, washing the dishes and wiping her hands on her apron before sitting down for a cup of tea. Meanwhile, Al was in his office punching numbers on a giant calculator. Now, when I stop by the farm, Tessa is doing the work, continuing the legacy of the Diemand Farm.

My mother-in-law, Elsie Diemand, was just wonderful. So kind to me. I’m shaking my head in amazement as I write this. When I was a young bride to Peter, I told Elsie that I wanted to have a Pampered Chef party at our home. And Elsie looked at me and softly said, “Well…remember to ask yourself, ‘Do I want it or do I need it?’”

A particular memory I have is helping with the installation of metal roofing on the new cattle shed behind the store. Eddie and his crew had already completed the framing for the building and the roof was the last piece. The building is probably 70′ long and we worked our way across installing the roof panels 3′ at a time. When we got to the far end, I was amazed to see that the last panel lined up absolutely perfectly with the edge of the roof – not even 1/4″ out over the 20′ length of the panel. I complimented Eddie on his good work and he just kind of grunted, as if to say “well, of course”. But I like to think he was secretly pleased. What a wild man he was! I miss him. Congrats to the farm on 90 years. May there be many more.

I have been blessed to be a neighbor to the Diemand Farm. I have three children who love to come and visit. I visit almost daily, either for coffee or food. Plus Anne gives really good hugs! Everyone at the farm you meet are the salt of the earth. Honestly, I could go really deep with the type of people they are…they are incredible, and so is the staff, and so is the food! We own Mormon Hollow Auto right down the road and started up 15 years ago and they welcomed us in like we were always there. They support our business and we support them. They hold a huge space in my heart.

Ada remembers getting to meet the chicks and the careful contact precautions (scrubbing shoes on the mat) to keep the chicks healthy. I remember walking into the farm store through the decades and always being greeted with warmth, love, and hugs and an evolving but ever impressive array of home cooked food. We love you guys.

Walking into the farm and feeling like it’s a second home, so many memories. Seeing the baby chicks and turkeys, baby cows, goats and feeding the baby lambs. The farm brings so much tradition with the food and events. And of course, the people who are friendly, know their customers, and take pride in what they do for the community (near and far).
